Process

Research Phase
Secondary Research

As a global pandemic which necessitated medical, governmental, technological and societal interventions, it was imperative to firstly understand the spread of the Covid-19, suggested precautionary measures and the ones already implemented. This was done through in-depth literature review of WHO guidelines, news, government websites, digital articles and most importantly, the Indian Government's official app for contact tracing and self-assessment of Covid-19, Aarogya Setu so that in the long run, the suggested measures can work seamlessly with the existing ones.

Primary Research

A. Telephonic Interviews and Online Survey:
Through this, the viewpoints, concerns and technology adeptness of people from different ages, professions and economic backgrounds was pivotal in charting out the focus areas of the proposed system. We also connected with people working in industries to gain insights about the products used to maintain sanitation and social distancing.

B. Co-Creation Workshop
We conducted a co-creation workshop with people to brainstorm possible measures that can be taken to keep everyone safe. Then, a voting of popular ideas was done and the top voted ideas were categorised into 'Burning' and 'Simmering' categories. This was done to further incorporate the user perspective in our design solution.

C. Pre-pandemic User Scenarios

To bring about a revised lifestyle due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was first important to look into the daily routines of people and understand possible scenarios of contracting the virus.

Ideation and Synthesis Phase
A. Brainstorming

The research led us to brainstorm for various concepts involved in the design solution. They were grouped under five categories as below.

Learnings and the Road Ahead

Working on a project in a lockdown situation helped me to learn immensely about conducting research, working with my team members and designing virtually. Our solution was selected as one of the winning entries in the Interaction/Service Design area and is available for download and use as part of the Open Design initiative. It shall be published in three formats: (a) published online, (b) printed as a book and (c) displayed in a travelling exhibitions during 2020-2021.

I am grateful to everyone who supported us in making this project a success!/Service Design area and is available for download and use as part of the Open Design initiative. It shall be published in three formats: (a) published online, (b) printed as a book and (c) displayed in a travelling exhibitions during 2020-2021.
